Survivors!

I promise that this will be the last blog post I will ever make about planets, but I am having way too much fun researching and discussing these damn things. It’s so fun to talk about planets for me. I really loved science fiction as a teenager and an adult, and I am surprised that I haven’t gotten into planet watching sooner. Truthfully, I was never good at science, so it is truly interesting to me that I have been able to retain and discuss this information without being completely lost in the meanings or descriptions. Anyway, I hope you enjoy today’s post because some of this is cool!

I am sure many of you have heard of Habitable Zones, so I won’t be going into the expansive and comprehensive meaning of what they are. I will say however, that a Gas Giant has been found in one of these zones, and the planet has been named Gliese 876 b. Again, for laziness sake I will be calling it planet b. In summary, a habitable zone is what you would call the spherical shell surrounding a star that allows the planet itself to be optimal for water to exist. Yes, that is right, a planet that may have water within its planet and in turn, may be hospitable for humans. Now, this gas giant resides within its suns habitable zone.

Granted, we can’t live on a Gas Giant. It is just impossible. It’s made of gas! But really, that means very little. We don’t discover planets just for the sake of us being able to live on them. What this really means, is that there could be an atmosphere that can create water on this Gas Giant. That means that not only could the planet itself orbit moons that can grow some form of extra-terrestrial life forms that can eventually become intelligent, but that they Gas Giant itself may be able to create life. Think about that. This is the only planet in the known universe that is a Gas Giant that could create life. Now, I don’t mean to scare anyone here, but this really does just scream the monsters from the Cloverfield films because I can’t imagine life on a Gas Giant being an herbivore.

This next Gas Giant is going to be just as interesting as the planet that could create our future slave masters. There was a gas giant that had been found which is currently in orbit of a white dwarf star. This planet is called V391 Pegasi b. This may not sound interesting at first, but then you consider what a white dwarf star is. Before it was a white dwarf, it was a red giant. This means that at some point it was dying and was the hottest is could ever be. This would be so hot that it was first believed it would basically evaporate our planet, and surrounding planets. This gas giant is known as the survivor, because at one point it may have skimmed or orbited the dying star. That means it survived the destruction phase. This was believed impossible for a long time and has even started a theory that our planet and the surrounding planets of the solar system may not even be destroyed if the sun dies, which has always been believed.

Cluster stars

Yesterday I had a lot of fun talking about the oldest planets that we are aware of, and the closest planet from us. But today I wanted to talk about several different planets too. Today, I want to talk about a few other interesting planets. One of the planets that I will be discussing is the planet with the most amount of suns around it, and the solar system with the most number of exoplanets. If I have the time to do it, I also want to discuss a few other interesting planets!

The first planet I want to talk about a little bit is a planet called 91 Aquarii b, which is a planet that was found in November of 2003 along with many of the planets this blog has talked a little about. Aquarii b (which I will now refer to as planet b due to how complicated that name is to type) is the planet that has the most amount of surrounding suns that we are currently aware of. I know that when I think of what makes a planet, they usually have one sun orbiting. I also think that when I see a star or two in the sky, they simply represent another star or planet in the sky. However, thanks to planet b I have learnt that some planets have many surrounding suns, and many of the stars we see in the nights sky aren’t just one sky but are in fact entire solar systems or multiple star systems that are so far away from us they look as if they merge into one big star.

Now, when planet b was first discovered, it was found accidentally. Originally the 91 Aquarii system was first found, and it was discovered to have five stars. This is not uncommon, but there is a reason this specific system was distinguished. It was discovered that the primary star of the system (Aquarii A) was being orbited by a gas giant. Now, this specific star is interesting because it was discovered in multiple star systems rather than the one. This may sound confusing, but it is rather simple. When a gas giant is found, it is usually discovered either on its own or within one cluster of stars entirely separate from others. With planet b, it was found in multiple star systems, and only few planets have been discovered in such a fashion.

The system that has the most exoplanets surrounding its star system is a planet called 55 Cancri. Like the previous planet we spoke about, this solar system is interesting thanks to Cancri b. Cancri b is interesting because it shares its name with Cancri A, and both planets are technically the primary star of the system. However, what makes this one interesting is Cancri b and 5 other Neptune-like stars surround Cancri a. This may sound confusing, but it is quite simple. Cancri b surrounds and orbits planet a, but along with e, f, d and c, they all obit planet a. Then, the additional planets (e, f, d, and c) have its own orbit around Cancri b in tangent of planet a. There are two separate orbits around the system. This is a very rare occurrence, and only ever happens around suns rather than planets.

Oldest planet in known existence!

I want to continue from where I left off yesterdays blog post by talking somewhat about the more interesting planets in the solar system. I think that you can never learn too much about some of the many fascinating planets that exist within our known galaxy and other galaxies. A good example of this would be the planet named Methuselah. It may not sound very interesting at first glance because it sounds like a roman god or even an ancient Greek mythical creature. However, the actual planet is very interesting because it is believed that Methuselah is the oldest known planet to human kind. This alone makes the planet itself incredibly fascinating, as I have always wondered what the oldest planet that we are aware of is. Now, I want to discuss some of the smaller details regarding Methuselah, so we can learn a bit about the oldest known planet.

Methuselah as a planet is the oldest exoplanet that has been found, being 13 billion years old. That is a long, long time for a planet to exist, especially since by then most planets would be destroyed. What is even more interesting to think about, Methuselah is 13 billion years old, but the universe itself is only 13.7 billion years old itself. 700 million years are what separates the start of the universe to this planet, which is little to inconsequential over the long term. There is a reason that this planet dates back so close to the start of the universe. There is a cluster of stars that is composed of the very first starts created after the big bang. Methuselah is the oldest of these, making it probably the oldest planet in the universe. What is believed from our knowledge of stars and exoskeletons of planets, the planet itself must be really, old. It was only found in 2003 that it is indeed so old, meaning our ancestors have seen the oldest start in the known universe and have never really understood what they were looking at the whole time.

This is cheating a little bit since I am not talking about a specific planet, but rather a system of planets. You could consider this another solar system within the galaxy, and it is called Epsilon Eridani. I’m not quite sure why they chose that name, but apparently it was named after their sun. What makes this system of planets so interesting is that it is the closet star confirmed to our own solar system at 10 light years away from our own solar system. It has two asteroid belts rather than just the one that our own has, and even a planet or star that has its own dust ring beyond its orbit which may be produced by the comets that have bumped into each other over time.

I feel like with all these discoveries that I have made about the many planets that exist away from our own solar system, I must continue discussing some of these planets. Even tomorrow, I’m going to take time to discuss the planet with the most amount of suns and even a star that has somehow survived its own sun. There is even information about the worlds first known super-earth and what could be considered a hot Neptune. So check out some previous posts and future posts too!

Earth-like Planets!

There are so many planets within the galaxy and beyond that I didn’t quite know where to start with discussing some of the planets. I decided that the first planet I wanted to discuss somewhat was the planet most like Earth. This planet is strangely called Gliese 581 d. Another more recent name for the planet is also called Mega Earth. This is because the planet itself is the most like earth that we have seen to date, but the planet itself is anywhere from 7 to 14 times the mass of Earth itself. I’m not entirely sure where the super-Earth is located within the galaxy, but there are some interesting pieces to note. The planet itself is special as the planet itself has its orbit within a habitable zone in the galaxy so the planet itself is quite safe.

Another interesting part about the planet is that it so closely matches earth itself. The planet has a solid surface which allows for any water that is present within the planet itself to form large liquid oceans like our own planet. It also means that the landmass can somewhat imitate that of Earths and may be able to create something close to the same atmosphere that our planet currently does too. The only difference is the estimated level of gravity within the planet itself, and that means that if the difference is not too significant we could perhaps colonise the planet ourselves if necessary. Some possibly believe that due to the similarities of this planet with our own means that there may be the equivalent to humans on super-Earth, or at least possible intelligent life forms that are inhabiting the planet itself. Some have apparently sent some form of greetings or potential communication to the planet to see if there are indeed life forms, but I am unsure of the contact.

Speaking of potential super-Earths, another planet that is considered a special earth has also been spotted even closer to our own solar system calls GJ 1214 b. So far, the most scientific piece of information that I have learnt is how lazy and ridiculous these planets are named. I always thought they would be named after something on the planet or the person who had found the planet rather than simply named after random letters and numbers. This planet is 42 light years away from Earth, which may not sound like a lot, but I think a light year is considered a year travelling at the speed of light. I have just googled this piece of information and yes, a light year is named after how long it takes for light to travel from one place to another. Otherwise known as six million million miles away. You may think I accidentally repeated million twice, but no, it is six million million miles away which is crazy to comprehend. The difference between this planet and others is that the surface is much hotter than our own planets, but it’s not too hot that an atmosphere cannot exist.

I have had a lot of fun writing this blog post today, and I am glad that I learnt what a light year is. I never realised just how far a lightyear is, but I guess it makes sense considering how quickly light can travel. That really does make your life feel inconsequential. Space and Planets!

Here at DFWMM, we are going to learn about science together! I don’t really know much about science at all, but I have always wanted to learn more. One of the most scientific things that I have ever been interested in is space. I have always found space to be interesting, and I want to focus most of the blog posts on space. There are so many planets in the universe and I really want to discuss some of the more amazing and interesting planets that exist. While I will be doing some proper research on the subject, I heard that there is a planet somewhere in the universe that is made mostly of diamonds. I think that it is within this galaxy rather than just somewhere in the universe, but I will make sure to talk about it at some point in the future.

I’m sure there are some other interesting planets out there in this galaxy or the universe, and over the next few weeks before I begin some more scientific conversations, I want to discuss some of those planets. I find them to be amazing because as stupid as it may sound, there are an infinite number of stars in the universe. They span an area that is impossible to imagine and is difficult to really comprehend. When you really think about what some of these planets could really be made of or what some of them really consist of in terms of the atmosphere or habitats, it is somewhat worrying. It does not feel that you could really comprehend just how special of a thing life can be, or even how amazing the universe is.

Something that I have also been somewhat interested in even if it is not as interesting as the planets or stars are natural elements. The periodic table is something that I had difficulty learning in life because I couldn’t memorize the different elements or symbols for the elements. But I found the elements themselves interesting because of the different compounds and combinations that can be created. I want to learn more about the periodic table, and I want to learn more about the elements that comprise of the periodic table. For those who are not antiquated with science like me understand that there are four “main elements” that comprise the world, and those are earth, fire, wind and water. They are not the actual elements that comprise the world, but those are the ones we can truly see. Everything in the world revolves around the four, but strangely enough, those same elements are comprised of those from the periodic table. That is what I find so fascinating about it. The fact that all those elements can create things so simple as the four, yet also comprise everything that we understand about space and the universe altogether.

There are so many things to learn about science that are relevant to our daily lives, or life. Although that may sound obvious and obtuse, science plays an active role in every aspect within our lives from working with electronics like a computer to simply breathing and walking. Science plays a vital factor into every role or aspect in our lives, and while it isn’t necessary to appreciate the role that it plays, we should be aware of it.
